Members of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) will gather on Sunday August 25 to celebrate one of the Shoalhaven’s oldest brigades.

Deputy Commissioner Kyle Stewart will be joined by special guests at the Basin View fire station to mark its 75th anniversary.

“We are unveiling a memorial garden to celebrate this milestone and in recognition of the commitment our volunteers have made to the proud history of Basin View,” Deputy Commissioner Stewart said.

“Founded in 1949, Basin View Brigade was built on the generosity of local community members, who provided the basic equipment necessary to protect others during times of crisis.

“The brigade now has 59 active members who respond to a range of emergencies, including bush and grass fires, motor vehicle accidents, and incidents out of area. As one of the Shoalhaven’s boat brigades, its members also protect islands in St Georges Basin and local waterfront properties.”

Brigade Captain Gary Creer said the event is an important opportunity to take stock of how far the brigade has come and what it has achieved.

“We look forward to honouring the past and looking to the future, another 75 years of serving the Shoalhaven and broader NSW community,” Captain Creer said.

Deputy Commissioner Stewart said Basin View members have attended a number of major fires over the years, including those at Deans Gap and Wirritin in 2013, and the 2019-20 fires in Currowan and Grafton.
