Marine Rescue Shoalhaven Unit Commander Marty Kaye has welcomed a $1.39 million election commitment from Federal Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips, to help fund a new unit base at Crookhaven Heads.

The funding commitment will go towards demolishing the existing building and constructing a new one that is better equipped to handle future emergencies.

“Having served the community well for more than 80 years, and marine search and rescue services for the past 40, the existing Pilot House at Crookhaven Heads is no longer fit for purpose. The new Marine Rescue Shoalhaven base will ensure our 96 volunteers have a purpose-built facility to support Marine Rescue NSW’s mission of saving lives on the water,” said Unit Commander Kaye.

“The new facility will include a radio room, crew areas, community meeting spaces, storage, and garaging for vessels, including the Shoalhaven-based Marine Rescue NSW multi-purpose vessel, which was recently deployed to northern NSW to support communities impacted by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

“With this funding commitment, construction on the new base should commence later this year. The new single-level Marine Rescue Shoalhaven base is DA-approved and will be built on the existing site. Marine Rescue NSW and the state government will contribute the remaining funds required to ensure this important community facility becomes a reality,” said Unit Commander Kaye.

Marine Rescue NSW is a volunteer based not-for-profit professional organisation dedicated to keeping boaters safe on the water and supporting local communities.
