Shoalhaven Mayoral Candidate Jemma Tribe says if elected, her team will develop a model for community groups to utilise who wish to carry out projects without the need for Council’s direct involvement.

“I have spoken to several community-based organisations who have secured their own grant funding to carry out works.

“They’ve then sought quotes and been ready to go, only to find that once Council is involved the project becomes more expensive and timelines blow out.”

“Many of the groups have the expertise and necessary insurance to carry out the projects themselves, all they need is a simple checklist from Council to check off and complete.”

“Given Council’s financial challenges and limited resources, this would be a way of empowering community organisations to carry out projects,” added Jemma.

The Turf Club are one example of this in undertaking a concreting project.

They managed to resolve the issue and got the job done for almost half the cost.

“This goes to show that it can be done and very cost effectively. We just need to provide a simplified process for groups to follow so that it doesn’t need to be a major issue each time.” Jemma said.
