Kiama Council Mayor Cameron McDonald has again urged safe use of our beaches and waterways after the death of a teenager in the water at Gerringong’s Werri Lagoon late yesterday.
The teenager entered the water with two others, who raised the alarm when he didn’t return. Local Lifeguards, volunteers and a rescue team from a neighbouring area attended. Tragically the boy was unresponsive when pulled from the water despite all efforts.
Kiama Council and Mayor Cameron McDonald send sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
This is the third drowning at Kiama’s beaches this summer.
“Kiama Council Lifeguards, the rescue team, and local helpers are to be commended for their efforts in what has been a difficult season on our beaches and waterways,” Cr McDonald said.
“We urge all visitors and locals to check swim conditions, swim to your abilities, and pay attention to the signs and other safety guidelines.”
“Please use our patrolled beaches, swim between the flags and always listen to instructions from our Lifeguards and volunteer Lifesavers.”
“Further, we call upon the Federal and State Governments to urgently implement a targeted multicultural beach education and swim safety program so that all Australians are equipped with the skills to stay safe on our beaches.”
“Three drownings at Kiama’s beaches this season is three too many, it’s time for immediate action in education and awareness on water safety,” Cr McDonald said.
